7 Essential Ways to Prep Your Vehicle for Winter

Winter weather doesn’t just make the roads slick—it puts serious stress on your vehicle’s essential systems. Don’t wait for the first blizzard to find out your car isn’t ready! A little preparation now can prevent costly repairs and dangerous breakdowns later.

Your Vehicle Winterization Checklist –

1. See Clearly: Wipers & Washer Fluid đź’§

Visibility is non-negotiable in winter driving, with snow, slush, and road salt constantly obscuring your view.

Replace Your Wipers: Replace your wiper blades at the start of the season. Old, cracked, or hardened blades will streak and fail to clear the windshield effectively.

Check Winter Fluid: Empty your reservoir of summer fluid and fill it with winter-specific washer fluid. This fluid contains methanol to prevent it from freezing in the reservoir and on your windshield, even in sub-zero temperatures.

2. Protect Your Engine with Antifreeze 🚫🧊

Antifreeze (or coolant) keeps your engine from freezing and overheating. If your coolant level is low, your engine is at risk.

Verify Freeze Protection: If you are unsure about the age or type of the coolant currently in your vehicle, it’s best to check its freeze protection level. If it’s old, the wrong kind, or if you’re not certain, the safest bet is to have the system professionally drained and refilled with fresh, winter-rated coolant appropriate for your vehicle.

Top it Off: Check your coolant reservoir and top it off if the level is low. Ensure the mixture is correct (some require a 50/50 mix of concentrate and water while some are premixed) for optimal freezing protection.

3. Power Up Your Battery 🔋

Cold temperatures drastically reduce a battery’s cranking power, and a weak battery is almost guaranteed to fail on the coldest morning.

Check the Voltage: Ensure your battery’s charge is high enough to handle the strain of cold starts.

Clean the Terminals: Check the terminals for white or blue corrosion. Clean it off with a wire brush.

4. Stop Safely: Brake System Check 🛑

Your brakes are your primary defense on slippery roads.

Have Them Checked: Cold, wet conditions can expose any weakness in your brake pads, rotors, or fluid lines. Have a professional inspect your entire brake system to ensure maximum stopping power and reliability.

5. Prevent Freeze-Ups: Fuel Management â›˝

Keeping your tank full does two important jobs in the winter. Maintaining at least half a tank of gas at all times is recommended for two reasons:

🔸It provides an emergency reserve if you were to get stranded.

🔸It prevents condensation (water droplets) from building up inside the tank, which can freeze and block the fuel line.

Diesel Drivers: Additives are essential. Diesel fuel naturally contains paraffin, which can turn into a gel-like substance (known as “gelling”) in cold temperatures, clogging your fuel filter. Use a winter diesel fuel additive (which we sell!) to lower the fuel’s cold filter plugging point and keep your engine running smoothly.

6. Maintain Engine Health: Oil Check & Change 🛢️

Engine oil becomes thicker (more viscous) in cold temperatures, which can make it harder for the engine to start and properly lubricate components.

Check the Level: Pull the dipstick and check your oil level. Low oil levels can lead to engine wear, especially during cold starts.

Consider a Winter-Grade Oil: If you are nearing an oil change, consider switching to a lower-viscosity oil for the winter. These oils are designed to flow better at lower temperatures, providing faster lubrication upon startup.

7. Maximize Grip: Tires & Tread 🛞

Tires are the only thing connecting you to the road, and their performance is severely degraded in snow and ice.

Check Inflation: Cold air lowers tire pressure, so check your tire pressure weekly. Refer to the sticker on your driver’s side door jamb for the correct PSI (pounds per square inch).

Inspect Tread: Use the “penny test” to check your tread depth. If you can see the top of Abraham Lincoln’s head when the penny is inserted upside down into the tread groove, it’s time for new tires.

Don’t Forget the Spare: Check the pressure and condition of your spare tire too!

Get a Gauge: Make sure you keep a reliable tire pressure gauge in your glove box.
