It’s easy to just hop in the driver’s seat, turn the key, and head out without a second thought, but there’s a handful of things that are important to check on your vehicle regularly. We see these things come through our auto repair shop all the time—repairs that could’ve been avoided or breakdowns that required a tow truck just because a simple check got overlooked. Whether you need roadside assistance or just want to keep your car running smooth, staying on top of your vehicle maintenance is key. Next time you’ve got 15 minutes and a clear driveway, here’s a quick checklist to make sure your ride is actually ready for the road.
Fluids
These are the fluids that keep your car running smooth and stopping safely. Check these once a month.
- Engine Oil – The lifeblood of your engine. Check the dipstick when the engine is cool. If it’s below the “low” mark or looks like thick black sludge, you’re overdue for a change. Without your oil being in tiptop shape, you risk your engine seizing up entirely.
- Brake Fluid – This is the big one. If it’s low or looks like dark coffee, your stopping power is at risk. It should be a clear, amber color. If this runs out or gets too dirty, your brake pedal might go straight to the floor when you need to stop or even cause you to lose control of your braking altogether.
- Power Steering Fluid – If this is low, you’ll hear that “whine” when you turn the wheel. Keeping it topped off saves you from replacing an expensive pump later on. If it runs dry, you’ll be fighting the steering wheel just to make a simple turn.
- Coolant / Antifreeze – This is huge with our wild WV temperature swings. It keeps the engine from melting when it hits the 70s and freezing when it’s back in the teens. Running out of coolant is the fastest way to overheat and blow a head gasket.
- Transmission Fluid – You usually check this while the engine is running and warm. If it smells burnt or looks super dark, that’s a warning sign you shouldn’t ignore. If you let it go, your car might stop shifting or leave you stuck in neutral.
- Windshield Washer Fluid – It’s the most basic thing on the list, but with the salt and road grime we deal with around here, running out mid-drive is a genuine safety hazard. If you run out, you’re stuck driving blind the second a truck splashes mud on your glass.
Hardware
These are the items that usually don’t tell you they’re broken until it’s a really bad time for them to fail. Check these every other month.
- Wiper Blades – You don’t want to find out they’re dry-rotted or missing rubber pieces during a mountain downpour. If they’re streaking or clicking, it’s time for new ones. If they fail during a storm, you won’t be able to see the road ahead of you.
- Tire Pressure (including the spare!) – Most people forget to check the spare tire until they actually need it and realize it’s flat, too. Give it a quick check so you aren’t stranded. If your pressure is too low, you risk a blowout.
- The Battery Terminals – Look for that white, crusty corrosion. If it’s there, your battery has to work twice as hard to start the car. If you ignore it, you might walk out one morning to a car that won’t even try to click over.
- Air Filter – If it’s clogged with dust and road salt, the engine can’t breathe, which kills your gas mileage and makes the car feel sluggish. If it gets bad enough, it can actually cause your engine to stumble or stall.
Lighting
Since you can’t see your own tail lights while you’re driving, this is the part where you grab a friend. Check these every few months.
- Reverse Lights and Brake Lights – Have a buddy stand behind the truck while you tap the pedals. It’s a lot better to find out a bulb is out this way than getting pulled over or having someone rear-end you because they didn’t know you were stopping.
